This April, the Commonwealth held the first meeting of its newly established Massachusetts Commission on LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender) Aging.  The first statewide commission on this topic in the country, the Massachusetts Commission on LGBT Aging was formed to advise the Legislature on the needs of older lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender adults and caregivers in the Massachusetts.

We pleased to report that our Council was one of the organizations named by the Legislature to serve on this 20-member commission.  Lisa Gurgone, Executive Director, has been appointed to serve as the Council representative to this Commission and is also actively engaged in the Long Term Care Services and Supports sub-committee convened through this project.

The Commission will be holding 4 listening sessions across the state to learn from older adults, caregivers, family members, social service providers and others about how the state can be more effective in ensuring that this population is able to age with dignity.  The listening sessions will be in Boston, Orleans, Worcester and Holyoke.  They are open to the public and the Commission hopes to attract a diverse group of stakeholders to share their thoughts.
